A little late, but everyone who asked pretty much nailed the definition of nation and state. A state can be made up of many nations, whereas the term "nation" is often incorrectly applied to the state and various other terms, such as "nationalism" and "international affairs" (which would be more accurately represented by "state"). A good author to read on this is Walker Connor, and if you want some throwbacks: Rousseau, Herder and Kant and their essays on the development of nationalism.
